Graduated in Medical Biochemistry from the University of Kent at Canterbury in 1978. He received his PhD from Institute of Neurology, Queen Square, University of London in 1983, with a thesis defining the inflammatory processes accompanying cerebral stroke. He completed his postdoctoral training at the Ludwig Institute for Cancer Research. In 1986, he was appointed a Welcome Research Associate at Royal College of Surgeons and Institute for Child Health, London.
Dr Bhakoo was appointed as a Staff Scientist and University Research Lecturer at the MRC Magnetic Resonance Spectroscopy Unit, Department of Biochemistry, University of Oxford in 1996. He returned to London as a MRC Group Head and Senior Lecturer at the MRC Clinical Sciences Centre, Hammersmith Hospital, Imperial College London (2002), to establish the Stem Cell Imaging Group. The group developed preclinical models directed towards improving our understanding of stem cell behaviour post transplantation, in different tissues including the brain, spinal cord and heart. The nanoparticles developed for tracking labelled stem cells by MRI under this programme, are presently undergoing clinical trials in Denmark.
In 2009, Dr Bhakoo was appointed as the Head of the Translational Molecular Imaging Group, based within the Singapore Bioimaging Consortium (SBIC), where he is developing multi-modal imaging technologies to monitor stem cell-based therapies, inflammatory processes and oncology. In 2011, Dr Bhakoo was appointed Director of the newly established facility at A*STAR, the Translational Imaging Industrial Laboratory, which works directly with industry to develop new drugs through imaging technologies. He also holds several external academic posts including, Adjunct Associate Professor in the Departments of Biochemistry and Orthopaedic Surgery, NUS.
